Sustainability
Sustainability is one of the pillars on which the Valserena philosophy is based.
From the cultivation of the fields to the sale of the cheese, each stage is
monitored for reduce the environmental impact of our production chain.

Respect for fauna and water resources through the reduction of fertilizers and herbicides
Valserena adheres to the PSR measure of integrated agriculture which regulates the use of fertilizers and herbicides according to quantities and qualities that do not harm fauna and water resources.

Protection of animal species
In Valserena the 5% of the company area is shaded by plants and hedges and we have flooded 26 hectares to give the possibility to various animals and many species of birds to be able to repair and reproduce with peace of mind.

Protection of bees thanks to the cultivation of phacelia
In Valserena we dedicate space to the cultivation of phacelia, a plant whose flower bees are very fond of.
Bees are at risk of extinction.. and so are we with them.
We all know how bees provide us with precious and unique products, obtained from their activity in the hive: obviously honey, but also pollen, royal jelly, wax and propolis, which man has always used for many different purposes.
However, what only a few know is that well 90% of the world's fruit plants owe their existence to pollinating animals and pollinating insects, among which bees play a leading role.
Not only that: as the United Nations explains, "more than 75% of world crops and more than 35% of world agriculture strictly depend on pollinators, who guarantee the safety of these food products and, at the same time, guarantee biodiversity".
And of course.. in our shop you can find the fantastic Valserena honey
produced by these wonderful creatures.

CO2 reduction thanks to no-till sowing
In Valserena we use the technique of “sow hard”. No-till sowing is an agronomic technique that involves the use of special machines that are able to sow directly in
unworked land, occupied on the surface by crop residues in rotation, including cover crops. Residues from rotational crops and the use of cover crops reduce the action
rain beating on the ground, allow the adhesion of part
of the excess water to the vegetative part and the decrease of the runoff speed with consequent reduction also of the solid transport and of the loss of nutritive elements.
It has been observed (Frascarelli, 2018):
✓ A 20% increase in production
✓ A saving of 60% of economic resources which would have been used for plowing and therefore less hours of work in the field and less use of fuel.
This implies a reduction in fuel consumption and therefore in CO2 emissions.

Investments in state-of-the-art equipment to reduce environmental impact
In Valserena we continuously invest in machinery and cultivation techniques that allow us to have low emissions and which make it possible to have products, for example hay, of such a quality as to allow limited use of feed.

Sustainable packaging for our products
In Valserena the choice of packaging is mainly guided by sustainability criteria.
✓ The gift boxes are designed to be 100% recyclable
✓ Shipments are packed with compostable and 100% recyclable material
✓ The butter has a new compostable wrapping
✓ The yogurt containers, thanks to the silk-screened glass jar, are sterilized and reused (we encourage the return
of the same to give him a second life)

Energy independence
Considering the difficult geopolitical situation, we are planning investments to become energy independent, thanks to solar panels and other low environmental impact solutions.
